Parental leave

The University recently approved a parental accommodation policy for all postdocs and grad student teaching and research assistants. The policy allows for 6 weeks of paid leave for the primary caregiver following the birth or adoption of a child. Full details are posted on the Office of Postdoc Affairs website:

According to Katy Flint of the NPA, postdocs who are considered regular employees often are governed by the regular staff maternity leave policies (which is often no paid leave, so you take your sick and vacation days or short-term disability).

Here are some examples of what other institutions provide:

Chemistry Department at University of Wisconsin: 12 weeks with pay for graduate students and postdocs

USC: fellowships to provide 50% salary for up to one semester, for graduate students and postdocs

Stanford: 6 weeks with pay for postdocs

UCSF: up to six months short term disability at 60% salary for postdocs

Lerner Res Institute at the Cleveland Clinic: 6 weeks with pay for all postdocs
